Google and Samsung have partnered create Health Connect, A platform and API (application programming interface) that provides developers with a toolset for synchronizing user health data between Android apps and devices. This makes it easier for users to track their health and fitness data across several different platforms.
When the user opts in, the developer can compile their health data in an encrypted hub on the user’s device. According to Google, users have complete control over the types of data they share and the apps they share data with. If multiple apps are collecting the same type of data, such as the steps you performed, users can choose to share that data with one app and another. Health Connect supports over 50 data types in various categories such as activity, anthropometry, cycle tracking, nutrition, sleep and vitals.
Samsung’s Executive Vice President, Taejong Jayan, said: press release.. “We are pleased to confirm that Samsung Health will also adopt Health Connect later this year. With the user’s permission, app developers will use the accurate and optimized data measured by the Galaxy Watch for Samsung Health and use it. It will also be available in the app. “
Health Connect is currently in open beta accessible to all Android developers. In addition to Samsung, Google is also working with developers of MyFitnessPal, Leap Fitness, and Withings on early access programs. Google Fit and Fitbit owned by Google are also set to adopt Health Connect. In short, this technology should be available in time. Release of Pixel Watch later this year..
As my colleague John Porter points out, Google has established its position thanks to its open approach to its products. The HealthConnect API is another example of Google’s willingness to work with other companies. Unlike Samsung and Apple, Google doesn’t tend to force (or push) users into the ecosystem, but with Pixel Watch Android tablet on the wayIf Google wants users to buy an expanding line of Pixel devices, it may need to start subtly guiding users towards their products.
